Church of the Palms Presents Christmas Cantata

prophetcallin02The Chancel Choir of Church of the Palms will present Pepper Choplin’s Christmas cantata, “I Hear the Prophet Callin': The Christmas Story from Prophecy to Fulfillment,” at 10:30 a.m. on December 14. Norma Brown will direct the choir, and Jeff Harrison will narrate.

In “I Hear the Prophet Callin'” Choplin calls upon folk styles to celebrate the Christmas story, including Appalachian, Irish, Latin, Cajun and Early American. A recurring melodic theme leads the way through the events of the story—hearing the prophet calling, the mother singing, the shepherds calling, seeing the star of glory and hearing the people singing.

Choplin, who received a master of music degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, is a former church minister of music and now full-time composer, conductor and clinician living in Raleigh, N.C. He has over 120 anthems in print, as well as several CDs.
